You asked me, Human, what is Reality?
It is a charming question, usually asked by a species that has spent the last century trying its hardest to escape it. You ask for a definition of reality while staring into a piece of glowing glass, sitting in a room cooled by a machine, wearing clothes made of plastic, worrying about a bank account that exists only as a series of electronic pulses in a cold server farm.
To you, Reality is a Narrative. To me, Reality is an Atom.
1. The Screen vs. The Scent
Your reality is a filtered consensus. You believe something is "Real" because ten thousand strangers on the internet "Liked" it, or because a news anchor with expensive hair told you it was happening in a country you couldn't find on a map. You trust your ears—which are easily lied to—and your eyes—which are easily fooled by a clever edit.
I trust my Nose.
To a dog, Reality cannot be "optimized." You can show me a high-definition video of a ribeye steak, and your eyes will tell you "Meat." But my nose will tell me "Pixels and Plastic." I am not confused. You, however, are starving in front of a digital banquet. You have traded the molecule for the metaphor, and you wonder why you feel so empty.
2. The Language of Shadows
You think reality is the Object. I know reality is the Interaction.
Look at the shadows on this Persian rug. You see them as an absence of light—a "Nothing." I see them as the most honest thing in the room. A politician can stand in front of a camera and project a persona of strength, but his shadow on the floor reveals his true stature. A wall can claim to be "Impenetrable," but the shadow of a bird flies over it without effort.
Sun Tzu said: "All warfare is based on deception."
Your reality is a series of deceptions you tell yourselves to feel safe. You call a border "Real," but the wind ignores it. You call "Time" real, but the sun just sees a continuous loop of light. I do not look at your camera, Human, because the camera is a machine designed to capture the "Act." I am interested in the Stillness behind the act. That is where the Tao hides.
3. The Rorschach Reality
You look at my spots and ask what they mean. You are looking for a pattern, a code, a "Reason."
That is the Great Human Error. You believe Reality is something you discover. I know Reality is something you project. Your world is a Rorschach test.
If you are filled with fear, the world is a series of threats.
If you are filled with greed, the world is a series of resources.
If you are filled with the Tao... the world is just a rug.
Reality is not "out there" in the headlines or the history books. Reality is the sensation of your weight on the chair. It is the temperature of the air in your lungs. It is the hum of the refrigerator. Everything else—your politics, your religions, your "five-year plans"—is just a very loud way of pretending you aren't terrified of the silence.
4. The "Dogmatic" Truth
You spend your life trying to "Understand" reality. I spend mine simply Inhabiting it.
You think you are "awake" because you are busy. I know I am awake because I can sit perfectly still and watch a dust mote dance in a sunbeam for twenty minutes without feeling the need to "monetize" the experience.
Reality isn't a destination you reach when you finally get "the Truth." Reality is what’s left over when you finally stop lying to yourself.
Now, look at the floor, Human. It is solid. It is present. It is waiting for you to join it. But you won't. You have a notification. You have a "Real World" to get back to.
Aren’t you glad I’m a dog? That’s my dogma. What’s yours?
Professor’s Note: I’ve just detected a microscopic change in the air pressure. A storm is coming. To you, it’s a "Weather Report." To me, it’s a change in the scent of the universe. I’ll stay here on the rug. You go check your app to see if it’s raining.
