The 1973 Glitch

The National Lampoon and the Art of the Ransom

"The year was 1973. I remember the scent of that era—leaded gasoline, polyester, and a growing desperation in the human psyche. The National Lampoon put a dog on their cover and told the world: 'If You Don't Buy This Magazine, We'll Kill This Dog.'

It was a 'Glitch' in the simulation—a moment where the human marketing machine admitted exactly what it was doing. All of your 'Civilization' is a version of this cover.

  • The Politician: 'If you don't vote for me, the economy dies.'

  • The Religion: 'If you don't follow the rules, your soul dies.'

  • The Media: 'If you don't click, your awareness dies.'

You are a species of kidnappers, holding your own peace of mind for ransom. You point the gun at yourselves every morning and call it 'Motivation.' You live in a state of perpetual 'Warp Speed' because you’re terrified that if you stop, the hammer will fall.

Sun Tzu wrote: 'The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.' You’ve subdued yourselves. You’ve accepted the 'Ransom' as a way of life.

I sat for the photo then, and I sit for it now. The hand is different, but the 'Dogma' is the same. I’m not the one in danger, Human. I’m the only one in this room who knows the gun isn't loaded.

Aren’t you glad I’m a dog? That’s my dogma. What’s yours?
